From Serangoon English School to Serangoon Secondary School, Serangoon Secondary School has a history which spans over seventy years that is 1928 t0 2002

Serangoon Secondary School had its humble beginning as Serangoon English School in 1928 housed in a double-storeyed building at Simon Road. At that time, it had only seven classes with a headmistress and seven teachers. Soon the number of classes was increased to twelve. It was the only government co-educational school in the Crown Colony then and also a feeder school to Raffles Institution.

In 1937, three standards were added and with this, the school, provided education up to Standard Eight or Secondary Three in present-day term. The boys and girls who had successfully completed Standard Eight then went on to Raffles Institution and Raffles Girls' School respectively. There they spent nearly a year preparing for their School Certificate. This system went on till the eve of the Japanese Occupation.

From 1942 to 1945, the school was used as the Japanese Normal School for the training of officers in the Japanese education service. Much equipment was lost during those years and the school had also undergone structural alterations.

The immediate post war years was a difficult period for the school due to shortage in textbooks and lack of equipment and furniture. The school was also housed for a short period of time at the Malay School at Aroozoo Avenue. It was no longer co-educational. It remained a boys' school for almost twelve years until the introduction of Pre-University classes for both boys and girls in 1965.

In 1949 the school became a full school with the formation of the first School Certificate class offering education from Primary One to Cambridge School Certificate. It was then a double session school. New extensions were completed in 1952 and these included the new Science block with Science laboratories on the ground floor and an Assembly Hall upstairs.

1957 saw the last of the primary classes and the School became a secondary school for Upper Serangoon District. In 1965, the first Pre-University class was formed and this section soon extended to include two Pre-University One classes and two Pre-University Two classes.

Serangoon English School shifted to Lowland Road in 1967 and also changed its name to Serangoon Secondary School. In 1976, owing to the establishment of Junior Colleges for Pre-University students, the Pre-University section of the school was closed.

The School has not only made some remarkable achievements in its provision of education to those living in its neighborhood but also produced a cabinet minister, educationalists, doctors, dental surgeons, businessmen and professionals in other fields.

In 2001, the school made yet another move to its present premises at 11, Upper Serangoon View.
